Real-Debrid vs Seedbox: Renting Access vs Owning Your Library

Real-Debrid is cheaper, and we say so. But it rents you access to a shared cache that can shrink. A seedbox is your own disk: what you put there stays there.

A seedbox server in a datacenter, its own disks lit up, with data streams flowing out

Since spring 2026, many Real-Debrid users have hit the same wall: files that worked yesterday now come back as removed. The usual answer online is another debrid service. There is a different option nobody puts next to it: **your own seedbox**. It is not cheaper, and we will say so plainly. What it changes is what you pay for: **renting access to someone else's cache, or owning your library**.

What changed at Real-Debrid in 2026

Real-Debrid works as a shared cache: when one user fetches a file, it stays on Real-Debrid's servers and the next user gets it instantly. That is why it feels fast and cheap. It also means the files are not yours, and the service decides what stays.

Since around May 2026, Real-Debrid filters that cache: cached files are refused based on their name, and users see this message:

“File was removed from debrid service due to copyright infringement”

Real-Debrid confirmed the filtering, citing European (DSA) and French (LCEN) law, as reported by TorrentFreak and ElfHosted. Its terms of service go further: Real-Debrid does not own or check the files, and it can change or stop the service at any time.

Debrid vs seedbox: renting access vs owning your library

The two are often mentioned together, but they work the other way round:

  • What you get: a debrid gives you access to a cache it controls. A seedbox gives you a server in a datacenter with your own disk (750 GB on an entry plan).
  • What stays: on a debrid, what worked yesterday can be removed today. On a seedbox, a file stays until you delete it.
  • Who decides: a debrid can filter or change its service under its own terms. On a seedbox, the library is yours to organize.
  • A copy at home: from a seedbox you can copy your files home over an encrypted connection (FTP over TLS at DediSeedbox), to watch offline, on a plane, or when the internet goes down.

Price over a year: Real-Debrid is cheaper

Honest answer first: Real-Debrid costs less. Its plans come out in the order of €3 a month, cheaper on longer plans (an order of magnitude: the official price page requires an account, so we quote it without a precise figure). An entry seedbox such as DediSeedbox Starter is about $10 a month for 750 GB. Over a year, that is roughly three times more for the seedbox.

The difference is what you pay for. With a debrid, you pay for instant access to a catalog someone else controls, which can shrink. With a seedbox, you pay for storage and a server that are yours, plus the apps you run on it. Compare current seedbox prices in our cheapest seedbox guide.

Plex and Jellyfin on your own server

A seedbox is not just a disk: it runs a media server in one click, so your files become your own streaming service, on your TV and your phone, away from home too. Our step-by-step guides:

Debrid or seedbox: which one fits you

They answer different needs:

  • Pick a debrid if you want cheap, instant access and you accept that what is available can shrink.
  • Pick a seedbox if you want your files to stay yours, with your own Plex or Jellyfin and a copy at home when you want it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Real-Debrid still working in 2026?+
Yes, the service still runs. But since around May 2026 it filters its shared cache, and some files now return the message "File was removed from debrid service due to copyright infringement", as reported by TorrentFreak. Its terms also allow it to change or stop the service at any time.
What is the best Real-Debrid alternative?+
Most lists only suggest other debrid services, which work the same way: a shared cache run by a company that decides what stays. A seedbox is a different model: your own server and disk, where files stay until you delete them. It costs more (about $10 a month against roughly €3) but you own your library.
Is Real-Debrid legal to use?+
The service itself is legal and operates under European law. What you download or stream with it is your responsibility. The same goes for a seedbox: only download what you have the right to.
Is a seedbox cheaper than Real-Debrid?+
No. Real-Debrid is in the order of €3 a month; an entry seedbox is about $10 a month for 750 GB. The seedbox costs more because you get your own storage and server, not shared access to a cache.
Can I use Plex or Jellyfin with a seedbox?+
Yes. Most seedbox providers install Plex, Jellyfin or Emby in one click, and the server streams your files to your TV and phone, at home or away. See our Plex and Jellyfin setup guides.
